Want to soak up the sun? Here’s where to swim outdoors in Oshawa:

Lakeview Park Beach On hot summer days, the Oshawa beach is an oasis of sand and clear water.  Come for a swim, bring buckets and shovels for making sand castles, or rent a court for a game of beach volleyball.   If the kids need a change of scenery, a huge climber with swings and a splash pad are a short walk up the hill to the park. Lifeguards will be on duty between 11:30 am and 6:00 pm during summer months, but hours may be extended on very hot days.

Insider Tip:  If you plan to swim, make sure to check the Durham Region Health Department Beach Monitoring Program website for the weekly beach report before you head out  The Region regularly checks for elevated levels of bacteria in the water, and each beach will be identified as “open” if the tests are normal, or “posted” if the beach is deemed unfit to swim.  If you forget, the information will be posted on the beach in a prominent place.

Rotary Park  This outdoor pool is during the summer and is run by the City of Oshawa.  For Oshawa residents of a certain age, Rotary is likely the pool of your youth – cement, rectangular, and deep.  You won’t find any aquatic bells and whistles like at newer city pools, but swimmers can enjoy a slide and a deep end so vast that swimming to the bottom makes your ears pop.  Plus there’s a concrete deck that’s perfect for warming up in the sun. Location;  254 Centre Street, Oshawa.

Camp Samac Pool  While located in Scout’s Canada-owned Camp Samac, the pool is owned and run by the City of Oshawa and opens for lessons and public swimming on June 26, 2015.  The pool is heated, the shallow area and gradual stairs are perfect for young children or timid swimmers, and the two small slides and deep area will keep older children entertained.   Enter off of Conlin Road, not Simcoe Street, and follow the road to the pool house. Location:  275 Conlin Road East.
