RMG Exposed is an annual juried photography auction and fundraising event for the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and an opportunity for emerging and established Durham Region photographers to gain recognition for their work.
RMG Exposed takes place on November 12, 2016, so we sat down with Donna Raetsen-Kemp, CEO of the RMG, to talk about this exciting event:
What inspired “Cirque”, the theme for RMG Exposed 2016?
Thanks for asking! Each year we work to bring a fresh energy to RMG Exposed. Cirque was inspired by a number of historic Oshawa photos in our Thomas Bouckley Collection. As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2017, we’re doing a lot of looking to the past. We came across wonderful images — a parade of elephants through downtown Oshawa, men in black bowler hats on a carousel, camels and more. This was our jumping off point for a more contemporary Cirque theme. That said, there will be no live elephants or camels — but keep an eye out for stilt-walkers and other surprises.
What can attendees expect to enjoy during RMG Exposed?
RMG Exposed is delight! It’s a lively cultural coming together wrapped around a high-spirited photography auction — food drink, artists, art, music and a little friendly competition as people vie for their favourite images.
Is contemporary photography becoming more noticed in the art market?
Yes, we’re hearing from people in the know that photography is a rapidly emerging collectors market. Several major galleries are branching out, establishing locations dedicated to lens-based work. It’s a more affordable entry point that’s attracting the younger collector and the previously “collection -shy”.
RMG Exposed is a fundraiser for the Gallery. How will the money be used?
RMG Exposed is our one and only fundraising event. By joining us for this event you’re making good things happen. The money raised helps us provide free and low cost programming for our community. You’re helping us make sure everyone can engage with art in ways that are meaningful to them. It’s a great event for a great cause!
