Who makes the best hamburger in Oshawa? We looked beyond fast food to find Oshawa’s favourite indie burger joints.
Justice Burgers (77 King Street East) Handily located within walking distance of the Courthouse, this new kid in town is already generating buzz and 5 star reviews for burgers made with hand-ground local, organic beef. Try a traditional Justice Burger, or try the Avocado Club, Buffalo and Blue Cheese, or Veggie.
Mr. Burger (314 Bloor Street West) This restaurant has recently undergone a change of ownership, and general consensus is it’s been for the better, notably the introduction of a fresh, not frozen, home burger to the menu. If nostalgia is what you’re after, you’ll find it here: burgers with a generous portion of fries, and they even serve milkshakes, including the hard-to-find banana flavour.
Lakeview Burger (1076 Cedar Street) Word on the street is to ignore Lakeview Burger’s decor and focus on the food. But with burgers like the mac and cheese (topped with cheese, mac and cheese bites and bacon), and the grilled cheese deluxe (made with, you guessed it, two grilled cheese sandwiches in place of buns), we’re pretty sure you won’t be focused on the decorations for long. Our contributors Maddie & Kiki reviewed Lakeview Burger, and you can read their experience here.
The Patty Shack (24 King Street East) A short walk from UOIT Regent Theatre and the GM Centre, the Patty Shack has the honour of racking up the most online reviews for all of the burger joints on our list, and to call the opinions divisive would be an understatement. Some diners praised the generous list of toppings, homemade sauces, and the fresh, handmade beef patties, as well as the fresh-made (not frozen) french fries, and got bonus points for their sweet potato fries, and 15% student discount. But other reviews mentioned issues with lack of cleanliness, small portions and poor customer service. What do you think? Share your experience at Patty Shack in the comments.
McCoy Burger Co (2069 Simcoe Street North) One of the newest burger joints on the scene, McCoy Burger Co.’s is located near Durham College and UOIT. The menu includes regular burgers and cheeseburgers, but also variations like the 2 by 4, and the double McCoy, and Halal burger, and, for diners who need an extra cholesterol hit, fried eggs are also available as a topping. We’d love to hear first hand from UOIT/DC students and staff about this place, so please share your burger experience in the comments.
