8 Awesome Things to do on Family Day

Run, jump and play at the Healthy Kids Community Challenge!  This Family Day event includes indoor and outdoor activity stations for children ages 6 to 12,  plus batting cages, free swimming, jumping castles, face painting, crafts, giveaways, and a preschooler area.  Location: Civic Recreation Centre, 99 Thornton Road South.  Time:   1 pm to 4 pm.  Cost:  FREE.

Get your hands on history, and discover the story of Oshawa’s past through interesting artifacts, and tours of the three houses that make up the Oshawa Community Museum!  Location:  Lakeview Park, 1450 Simcoe Street South. Time:  12 pm to 4 pm.  Cost:  FREE. 

The Canadian Automotive Museum opens its doors for the day, plus there are crafts and activities for kids! Location:  99 Simcoe Street South.  Time:  9 am to 5 pm.  Cost:  Adults $8, youth $5.  

Head to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery for a Lunar New Year Celebration: Year of the Monkey!  Design and paint paper lanterns, discover animal zodiacs to make creative animal masks, and enjoy other celebratory art making activities. Location:   72 Queen Street.  Time:  1 pm to 3 pm.  Cost:  FREE, drop in, no registration required!

The Trash Train makes a special Family Day stop at the Station Gallery in Whitby!  Create amazing art with materials that were headed to the trash, with help from the Gallery’s station crew.  Location:  1450 Henry Street, Whitby.  Time:  11 am to 2 pm.  Cost:  FREE, pre-registration recommended.  Call 905-668-4185.

Take a tour of Whitby’s newest museum, Lynde House!  Be transported through time in this Georgian gem, lovingly furnished with artifacts from two amalgamated collections, spanning over 200 years of history in Southern Ontario. Children are very welcome on tours, and can also enjoy crafts in the Visitor Centre.  Location:  900 Brock Street South, Whitby.  Time:  11 am to 4 pm.  Cost:  FREE, donations welcome.   

Celebrate Family Day at the Oshawa YMCA and enjoy a variety of fun family activities all for FREE! Get active with your kids and join in one of the many activities open FREE to the public, including:  basketball, swimming, bootcamp, crafts, table tennis and badminton.  Location:  99 Mary Street North.  Time:  8 am to 4 pm.  Cost: FREE.

Bring the whole gang along for some crazy funny family games, a jumping castle, hot dogs and popcorn, and a free showing of Big Hero 6 at the Oshawa Community Church!  Location:  71 Simcoe Street South.  Time:  1 pm.  Cost:  FREE.
