Ready to take on 2016?  Here’s what’s happening on New Year’s Day:

Jump into Lake Ontario at the annual Rotary Club of Oshawa’s Polar Bear Swim at Lakeview Park Beach! Swimmers will hit the water at 1 pm, then  warm up with hot chocolate and chicken soup around a fire.  To register, or for more information, contact Rhonda VanderLinde.

Cheer on the Oshawa Generals as they take on the Sudbury Wolves at the GM Centre.  Puck drops at 2:05 pm, and tickets start at $19.

Go for a spin round the rink at the Legends Centre! Parent and Tot Skate runs from 12 pm to 12:50pm, Family Skate from 1 pm to 2:30 pm, and Public Skate from 3 pm to 4:30 pm.  Regular admission fees apply.

Catch a movie – Cineplex Odeon at 1351 Grandview Street North is open, as is Landmark Theatres in Whitby.

Take a day trip to the Toronto Zoo!  It’s open 364 days a year, including New Years Day, and is full of birds, animals (pandas! white lion cubs!), fish and reptiles.  Hours are 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, tickets are $23 for Adults, $14 for children ages 3 to 12, and children under 2 are free. Parking is $12.  From Oshawa, take the 401 west to the Meadowvale exit, go north on Meadowvale, and follow the zoo signs.
