Free & Cheap Things to Do – October 2015

Grab fresh veggies, meat, baked goods and more at the second annual Durham College Campus Market, hosted by the Sustainability offices at DC and UOIT.  Note:  this is a cash-only event.  Date: October 1.  Location:  South Village Courtyard, 2000 Simcoe Street North.  Time:  10 am to 2 pm. Cost:  FREE to attend.

Catch a screening of the Audrey Hepburn classic Sabrina at the UOIT Regent Theatre Classic Movie Night.  Popcorn will be available for purchase. Date:  October 1.  Location:  50 King Street East.  Time:  7 pm.  Cost:  $5 cash only.

The Oshawa Art Association presents the 34th annual Fall Art Festival, showcasing the works of 70 local artists.  Date:  October 2 to 4.  Location:  Camp Samac, inside Council Hall.  Enter off Conlin Road.  Time:  10 am to 5 pm.  Cost:  FREE.

Celebrate The Living Room Community Art Studio’s first anniversary Birthday Yard Sale! Art kits, crafts, art, loot bags and craft material will be for sale – so stock up!  Date:  October 3.  Location:  149 Simcoe Street.  Time:  10 am to 4 pm.  Cost:  FREE to attend.

Bruce Croxon, former judge on CBC’s Dragons’ Den and co-founder of the online dating service Lavalife, will share his thoughts on innovation and entrepreneurship, as part of UOIT’s Homecoming 2015 celebration.  Date:  October 3.  Location:  Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, gyms 3 and 4 2000 Simcoe Street North.  Time:  1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.  Cost:  FREE.

Get your Halloween makeup out early, because the 3rd Annual Oshawa Zombie Walk is limping it’s way through Memorial Park.  All ages, styles, and stages of decay are welcome.  Date:  October 3. Location:  Memorial Park.  Time: gather at 7 pm, walk at 7:30 pm.  Cost:  FREE.

Lace up your running shoes for a good cause – Durham’s 16th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Run for the Cure! The CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single-day, community driven fundraising event in support of a vision to create a future without breast cancer. Take the family to the Fire Prevention Week Kick-off at the South Oshawa Community Centre!  Enjoy a free pancake breakfast with the firefighters, then kids and grown-ups can check out the interactive activities, plus the chance to win a door prize.  Date:  October 4.  Location:  1455 Cedar Street.  Time:  10 am to 3 pm.  Cost:  FREE, but donations to the Grandview Children’s Centre are welcome.  

Core 21 hosts Entrepreneurs in our Community, a monthly, casual gathering of local entrepreneurs to share their unique ideas and experiences. Date:  October 5.  Location:  21 Simcoe Street South. Time:  doors open at 6:30 pm. discussion starts at 7 pm. Cost:  FREE.

Exploring Art Through Fibre, featuring works from Rita Benson, Cathy Brownson, Karen Menzies, Rosemary Oliver and Marilyn Whitebread, opens at RMG’s Gallery A.  Opening reception to be held on October 18 from 1 pm to 3 pm.  Date:  October 6 – November 1.  Location:  72 Queen Street.  Time:  10 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.  Cost:  FREE.
