Free & Cheap Things to do September 12 – 13

The Rotary Club of Oshawa’s 14th Annual Ribfest rolls into Lakeview Park from September 11 to 13. Check out local vendors, live entertainment, and, of course, the chance to sample Ribbers from Ontario and the US.  Not sure what to expect?  Read our Guide to Ribfest before you head out. Date:  September 11, 12 pm to 12 am.  September 12, 11 am to 12 am, September 13, 11 am to 7 pm.  Location:  Lakeview Park.  Cost:  FREE.  Parking:  FREE.

Christmas comes early to the Oshawa Armoury, where everyone can enjoy breakfast and a visit with Santa Claus, with proceeds going to the Oshawa Santa Claus Parade. Date:  September 12.  Location: 53 Simcoe Street North.  Time:  9 am to 12 pm, with the big guy making an appearance at 10:30am. Cost:  FREE (breakfast extra).

Go beyond oils and pastels with a Textured Painting Workshop at The Living Room Community Art Studio.  In this two-week class, students will first learn about creating texture using drywall compounds, then return on September 19 to add paint.  Date:  September 12 & 19.  Location:  149 Simcoe Street South.  Time:  11 am to 1 pm.  Cost: Suggested donation of $10, or pay-what-you-can.

Perplexed by Fido’s fear of lavender pants, or Kitty’s unexpected ennui?  James White, the Pet Reader, will help you understand and connect with your pet through a tarot card reading.  Just bring a photo or something that belongs to your pet (but please leave the pet at home!).  Date: September 12.  Location:  Jess Hann Branch of the Oshawa Public Library. 199 Wentworth Street West.  Time:  2 pm to 4 pm.  Cost:  FREE, but registration is required.

Punk isn’t dead, but it sure is cheap!  So dust off your Docs, grab your Sex Pistols t-shirt, and head to the Moustache Club for the $2 Punk Show.  Cross Dog, Vs. The Borg, Whisker Biscuit and Sixteen Candles will be taking the stage. Date:  September 12.  Location:  15 Simcoe Street North. Time:  Doors open at 9 pm.  Cost:  $2 cover.  19+.

Head to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery for OPG Second Sundays!  Parents and children can make art inspired by sounds and movements.  Date:  September 13.  Location:  72 Queen Street.  Time:  1 pm to 3 pm.  Cost:  FREE

Join the Oshawa Community Museum for the annual tour of Union Cemetery. Learn about prominent citizens and important gravestones, plus people and industries associated with 19th century death and funeral customs.  Meet at the front gates of the cemetery.  Date:  September 13. Location:  760 King Street West.  Time:  2 pm to 4 pm.  Cost:  $5.
