What We Ate: Hollywood Cone

The dog days of summer have arrived, so we took four school-aged kids to check out Downtown Oshawa’s latest release, selling ice cream with a twist:  Hollywood Cone.

The kids loved the “Hollywood” theme, particularly the folding, upholstered movie theatre seats, though the adults wondered about the link between the – albeit lovely – thick wooden table tops and “Hollywood”.

Staff were neatly uniformed, greeted us enthusiastically, and deftly explained the menu options.  We opted for four small soft cones, which each came with a choice of either a bake shop or candy shop topping.  Being more of a candy shop crowd, three kids chose sour gummy bears with one rogue opting for pop rocks,

Our orders were filled quickly and were generously sized (the small cone made us wonder how much ice cream was loaded into a large), but easily held the topping pressed into it.  Not being overly sweet, the richness of the milk fat was allowed to dominate, while the topping provided a contrasting texture and an extra sugar hit.  Each small cone plus free topping was under $5.

Our verdict when the curtain closed on our visit?  As Roger Ebert would have said, two thumbs up.
